Project Description

The Alexander Bypass project is a new project which began construction this spring. This new bypass will alleviate congestion in the area by providing a route around downtown Alexander for trucks and easing truck traffic in the local community. The bypass will take trucks from US 85 to the west of Alexander, reconnecting them with US 85 north and south of Alexander. The completed project is being built to accommodate four lanes of traffic with a paved median and will be approximately 3.7 miles long.

Current traffic counts estimate that approximately 12,000 vehicles travel through the town of Alexander. Many of these vehicles traveling through the town each day are trucks. This project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2014.

Current Project Status

  • Crews are currently paving the bypass and will be opening two lanes of traffic in mid to late September
  • Once the bypass opens, traffic will be routed head-to-head, and motorists should use caution
  • The bypass will be open with four lanes of traffic (two lanes in each direction) by the end of October
  • Motorists should use caution as crews complete paving of the bypass
